The department provides a responsible, contemporary regulatory framework to help build consumer and business confidence in the Queensland marketplace and encourage responsible and sustainable growth in the tourism and liquor industries.
Development of the Queensland wine industry also became part of the department's core responsibilities following the February 2004 Queensland State election.
In collaboration with Tourism Queensland and industry, the department contributes to the development of strategies that underpin the continued growth of the State's vital tourism industry. The department is now working to promote establishment of a strategic alliance between the tourism and wine industries to further strengthen the State's economy.
Tourism Queensland, the Government's peak organisation for the marketing and development of Queensland's tourism destinations, is among several statutory bodies, advisory boards and committees associated with the department.
The Office for Women is also part of our portfolio. This office oversees the delivery of the Queensland Government's policies for women, encouraging greater collaboration between government agencies, business, industry and the community to improve the lives of women.
The department has a growing reputation for the effective administration of independent dispute resolution bodies which contribute to a key Government priority - a fair, socially-cohesive and culturally-vibrant society.
The Office of the Commissioner for Body Corporate and Community Management provides accessible, equitable, responsive and authoritative information and dispute resolution services to the rapidly growing community living sector in Queensland, including owners, potential purchasers, occupiers and those involved in the management of community titles schemes.
The Commercial and Consumer Tribunal provides dispute resolution, decision review and disciplinary proceeding services for 12 industry areas including architects, building, building certifiers, engineers, gaming (machine allocation disputes), liquor, manufactured homes (residential parks), plumbers, property agents and motor dealers, residential services (accreditation), retirement villages and tourism services.
The department has an operating budget of $58 million (2002-03), employs approximately 550 staff and delivers a wide range of services through a statewide network of offices in Brisbane, Cairns, Hervey Bay, Mackay, Maroochydore, Mount Isa, Rockhampton, Southport, Toowoomba and Townsville.
