The Queensland wine industry has grown significantly over the years to cover approximately 1500 hectares throughout the State. The majority of this growth has occurred during the past 7 years with significant plantings throughout the southeast corner of the State.
Creation of the Wine Industry Development Division followed the February 2004 State Election, as part of the ministerial portfolio of Tourism and Fair Trading Minister, Margaret Keech, is believed to be an Australian-first.
The Queensland wine industry will benefit from this high level Government support and from new funding of $0.5 million annually to the Department to help develop the industry, promote Queensland wines to national and international markets, and foster a strategic alliance between the tourism and wine sectors.

Previously, various aspects of the industry were dispersed across agencies, but this more coordinated whole-of-Government approach will maximise opportunities and minimise any barriers to development of the industry.
